In the midst of COVID-19 lockdown, football fans all over the world have been eagerly awaiting on news of when the football season will be able to resume, if it ever will.
With the whole of the UK, and most of Europe, in lockdown, European footballing competition has come to a standstill, meaning the likes of La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and the Premier League have all come to a halt with no clear indication of when or how they will be completed.
Obviously, in the grand scheme of a worldwide pandemic, football doesn’t seem that important, but this is the longest most football fans have been without any sort of club or international football, and fans are getting a little nervous that it may be along time before they get to see it again. Especially when you take into account talks of the entirety of next season being played behind closed doors.
In the midst of all the chaos, the efficient Germans seem to be confident enough in the way they have dealt with the pandemic that they are resuming their Bundesliga season soon.
In France and Holland, officials have cancelled their top flight leagues stating that the current standing are final. This sees PSG and Ajax crowned champions, but also sees the likes of Amiens and Tououse relegated leading Amiens to launch a petition to demand justice for relegation from a season that hasn’t been completed.
The move by the Bundesliga could see German football return as soon as May 9. However, huge questions still surround the decision to return so quickly and many state that it is simply to soon to risk so many people. The Government has already ruled out large gatherings so games will inevitably be played behind closed doors and already certain German clubs have reported cases of COVID-19 amongst players, who they state are taking the necessary precautions in quarantine.
