Real Madrid win La Liga

It has been three years since they last lifted the La Liga trophy, but after a 2-1 victory over Villarreal, they secured their 34th Spanish title, wrestling it away from a Barcelona side that capitulated at home to Osasuna.

Even a win for Barcelona would not have been enough as victory in Madrid saw Zinedine Zidane’s men hit 86 points and put them out of reach of the Blaugrana.

This is Zidane’s second league title with Real Madrid and the manager said that wrapping up the league with a game to spare made him happier than winning the Champions League.

The game at the empty Alfredo di Stefano Stadium was no easy victory for Real Madrid; their first goal was scored by Karim Benzema as his shot squirmed through the legs of goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo.

The Frenchman’s second goal came from a controversial retaken penalty as Sergio Ramos chose to roll his effort for Benzema to smash in which was ultimately ruled out. On the retake Benzema placed the ball into the net making the game 2-0.

Villareal managed to pull one back rough Vicente Iborra but the goal was little than a consolation by the end.

Real have held an advantage over Barcelona for a number of months as Messi and Co have struggled to maintain their usual dominance with a number of poorly performing new signings. Over at the Camp Nou a failure to replace iconic players like Xavi and Iniesta over the following years has affected performances on the pitch, especially in Europe.

Big money signings of Philippe Coutinho and Antoine Greizmann have failed to live up to expectations since moving to the sunny east coast of Spain with the former being palmed off on Bayern and looks set to be without a club at the start of next season.
