Oct 1, 2021

As October quickly approaches, we are beginning to prepare for the spooky season! Summer has officially come to an end as pumpkins and skeletons will start going up and in just a few weeks we’ll see trick or treaters on every corner! As you settle in for the colder weather, we thought we’d remind you of some classic scary movies to fill your October nights!

Scream

This iconic horror movie has spawned countless pop culture references and has gained a massive cult following. Scream masks are a common sight on Halloween and most horror movie buffs have rewatched this classic time and time again. With a variety of huge stars and some of the most memorable moments in horror movie history, it’s not difficult to see why!

The Omen

Another classic, The Omen was first released in 1976 which launched a series of sequels and even a 2006 remake of the original. The Omen is considered the most cursed movie of all time after a series of bizarre accidents during the filming process. The lead actor’s son committed suicide, then soon after his plane was struck by lightning. Likewise, two producers also suffered near misses with lightning in the weeks following, prompting one of them to carry a cross with him on-set.

A Nightmare On Elm Street

A Nightmare On Elm Street has gone down in history as having one of the most memorable horror characters, prompting a cult following and plenty of references throughout pop culture. Freddy Krueger, the dream-hopping murderer with knives on his hands, has terrified audiences since 1984.

Friday the 13th

We couldn’t mention Freddy without of course bringing in his nemesis – Jason. Jason Voorhees dons a now-iconic hockey mask as he hacks and slashes his way through a teen party at a summer camp. Jason first brought terror to the screens in 1980 and was the highest grossing horror movie franchise of all time until it was overtaken by the Halloween series with the 2018 sequel. Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street were, of course, subject to a crossover movie entitled Freddy vs Jason, which establishes them in a shared universe.

Hocus Pocus

We couldn’t get through the list without mentioning this bastion of horror movie culture. Hocus Pocus hit cinemas in 1993 and the performances of stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as three witches brought back to life on Halloween has delighted audiences ever since. Unfortunately, Hocus Pocus was never treated to a sequel, but as the other entries on the list show, it’s never too late!
