England maintained their 100% record with a hard-fight 2-1 victory over Poland at Wembley.

Goals from Harry Kane and Harry Maguire were enough to make it three out of three and keep England on top of Group I after Poland came from behind courtesy of a defensive howler from John Stones.

England started the match brightly, with Phil Foden and Kane creating a few half chances early on, while Raheem Sterling looked lively on the left flank. Indeed, it was Sterling who forced the breakthrough, as the Man City forward meandered through the Poland defence, only to be brought down in the box to earn his side a penalty.

Up stepped Kane, who duly put the Three Lions into the lead and the Tottenham striker set a new record for most goals from the spot in England’s history – not bad considering he’s still three months short of his 28th birthday.

With England ahead, it was looking like another routine win was on the cards, but Poland – and Stones – seemingly had other ideas. Midway through the second half, following a dodgy pass from keeper Nick Pope, Stones hesitated on the ball and criminally gave possession away in front of his own box. After picking up the ball, Jakub Moder played a one-two and once through on goal, the Brighton & Hove Albion striker blasted past the England keeper to level the score at one a piece.

With the scores level, it looked like both sides were set to share the spoils, but with six minutes to go Stones atoned for his earlier error, squaring for Maguire who fired a rocket into the roof of the net to put the hosts back in front.

The final few minutes made for a tense and anxious affair, but England held on to take all three points and ensue they remain in control at the top of the group.

Next up is the return fixture in Poland, and after a strong performance from the Eastern Europeans at Wembley, England will know they’ll need to be at their best to keep up their perfect record.
