How To Keep White Sneakers Clean

Those of you who are brave enough to hit the town in white kicks are an inspiration to us all! There’s nothing worse than an unexpected downpour or puddle backsplash turning those fresh pearly-white sneakers into a lacklustre grey that leaves a lot to be desired. Of course, trainers weren’t meant to be kept in a box and put up on display, but every sneakerhead knows that keeping white trainers clean and fresh all year round is a full-time responsibility. Let’s take a look at a few pointers for keeping your white sneakers clean.

Stock Up on Equipment

When it comes down to the nitty gritty details, cleaning your trainers and keeping that white shine is going to require some fairly high-spec equipment that a lot of sneakerheads won’t have around the house. Fret not, however, as Rome wasn’t built in a day!

The first thing to add to your arsenal is a professional soft bristle brush in order to work on those stubborn marks sooner rather than later, but an old toothbrush can work just fine too. You’ll also want to get your hands on a cleaning solution created specifically with cleaning sneakers in mind for the best results.

Pay Attention to the Material

The must-haves we’ve listed above are pretty basic, however things can get a lot more complicated once you take the material of the sneaker into consideration. After all, there is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to keeping those white trainers sparkling clean!

If you’ve got your leather kicks dirty then there’s no need to panic as most of it will come away with a wet wipe, however fabric trainers can be harder to work with and require a little more TLC. First things first, you’ll want to gently brush away any dried dirt so that it isn’t worked into the fabric and use the cleaning solution to make circular motions with the bristle brush and gently work out the dirt.

Suede sneakers are infamously stubborn when it comes to cleaning, especially when they’re white! If you were unlucky enough to land yourself in this position, you’ll need to put in a bit of elbow grease to reap the rewards. Make sure you’ve got a dedicated suede brush rather than a bristle brush for these trainers and try not to get them too wet or else you could damage the material. You’ll want to remove as much surface dirt as possible before working on the suede, and consider investing in a suede eraser for optimum results.

Washing Machines – Yay or Nay?

It can be tempting to throw your dirty sneakers into the washing machine after a soggy walk, however we’d heavily advise against this. Not only can the banging damage your machine, but this method can also ruin your pearly-white kicks in the process – and we’re not just talking about the colour!
