An Australian TV host was left “mortified” and with serious egg on his face after his mistake cost his network its exclusive interview with global superstar Adele. The interview, which would have been her only Australian interview booked to discuss her brand-new album, was cancelled after the host admitted that he had not listened to the new tracks.
Matt Doran of Channel 7 flew all the way from Sydney to London with two colleagues, a trip which, along with the rights to the interview, cost the Australian studio more than half a million pounds (£500,000). But the interview with Adele, which Doran forecast as “going to be pretty special” on Twitter beforehand, was abruptly brought to a close after it was revealed that Doran missed an email with the previews for the tracks from her new album, 30.
After the incident Doran described himself as “”mortified and unequivocally apologetic” and clarified that “it was an oversight but not a deliberate snub”. According to Doran, the song previews had been sent in an e-card format, which he had missed during his flight to London. He was “totally unaware” that he’d been emailed the previews, adding that it was “”the most important email [he] has ever missed.”
It is believed that the whole interview was complete before Adele asked the faithful question which saw Doran admit that he had not listened to the album they had just been discussing. This embarrassing moment has led to Sony canning the footage completely, so nobody will ever see this intense and awkward moment!
Doran has made a few statements since the incident, to confirm that the rumours of his sacking or suspension from Channel 7 are in fact false and to provide context on the incident. He confirmed that Adele did not storm out from the interview, as early reports had alleged, but in fact the opposite! “What was meant to be 20 minutes was extended to 29 minutes. The majority of the chat was about the album.”
But, unfortunately, even though this is the case we will still never see the footage unless Sony decides to release it (unlikely)! While all this was going on, political reporter Matt Doran of the ABC network was receiving backlash on Twitter by people mistaking him for the Australian host! “Go easy on me…” he tweeted in a brief response to the mistaken identity.
