Mortal Kombat: Dana White’s UFC island

ByPhil Collins

Apr 2, 2020

In the midst of COVID-19 and with the world on lockdown, including the sports world, it seems UFC organiser Dana White may have found a way for cage fighting to carry on.

The head of UFC has announced that UFC 249 will go ahead on April 18 at an undisclosed location. But with bigger sporting events, including the European Championship and Olympics having to call off their summer tournaments, how have the UFC been able to get around the quarantine?

The location for UFC 249 may be undisclosed but we have been given a teaser as to where it will be taking place as Dana has announced that they have secured a private island where fighters will be able to fly to instead of the states where travel restrictions are preventing them from accessing.

The private fighting island may sound like the premise for a new Mortal Kombat movie but with coronavirus quarantine still in affect around the world we are yet to see whether the plans will go ahead as scheduled as governments may be forced to get involved and put a stop to so many people congregating in order to organise fights of this size.

On said island, White has confirmed that fighters will be undergoing regular testing for the coronavirus before and when they arrive on the island. But is this enough to secure the safety of, not just the fighters, but the teams of professionals that come with each fighter?

Should UFC 249 go ahead on this private island, fans can expect the long awaited bout between lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson to go ahead with Justin Gaethje replacing Khabib, whom is currently in isolation in Russia.

Do you think that UFC 249 will be going ahead on a private island, or will this type of event inevitably be shut down in the face of the current COVID-19 scare?
