Football fan’s biggest fears are being realised this week as all football in the UK has been put on hold as coronavirus continues to spread around large parts of the UK.
Last weekend’s fixtures were set to go ahead – given the all clear by the UK government – until an emergency meeting was held amongst Premier League leaders, managers and players after Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and a number of high profile players tested positive for the virus.
Fixtures were initially set to go ahead behind closed doors but now the decision has been made to postpone the season until April 4th at the very latest. The decision was made in order to help protect players and staff and to try and avoid the league going ahead without the possibility for fans to attend.
What does this mean for the season?
Most of the UK is attempting to socially distance themselves and place themselves in quarantine at home to help reduce the spread of the virus. With all that time on their hands the debate is currently ongoing as to what will happen should the coronavirus quarantine run through the summer and the season be unable to finish.
Many suggest that the league should be called off all together and everyone should start from scratch next season. This will be much to the dismay of Liverpool fans who are 6 points away from securing their first ever Premier League trophy and their first League Title in 30 years.
Some suggest the league table should stand as it currently is with Liverpool lifting the trophy, European places going to the current top six and the current bottom three being relegated into the Championship. With 12 games of the season left to play this would be an incredibly tough decision to swallow for the bottom teams who have every chance of beating the drop with so many games left to play.
