Many of the top clubs are scrambling to make last ditch signings as the European transfer deadline slams shut tonight.
Manchester United look set to be the busiest club on home soil as the Red Devils look to add some quality to their side following yesterday’s crushing 6-1 defeat to Tottenham. United’s defensive weaknesses were exposed once again, but rather than move for a centre back if appears striker Edinson Cavani will arrive at Old Trafford to provide further options up front.
Porto left back Alex Telles is also expected to arrive, which United fans will welcome following the poor performances of Luke Shaw so far this season. The Brazilian is a forward-thinking modern-day full back who is arguably more comfortable on the ball than he is defending, so after looking so frail at the back it looks as though United truly do believe attack is the best form of defence.
United look set to miss out on Jadon Sancho after failing to meet Borussia Dortmund’s demands for the England international.
Jose Mourinho has warned Dele Alli he’ll struggle to get playing time this season, and there are now rumours the England international could seal a move away with PSG still said to be interested after seeing a couple of loan bids rejected. Spurs could make a last-ditch move for Inter centre back Milan Skriniar, who would add some real quality to Tottenham’s defence, although the clubs are said to be well apart in their valuation for the Slovakian.
Elsewhere, Everton are looking to build on their impressive start to the season with the addition of defender Ben Godfrey from Norwich. The Toffees have splashed out a potential £30m for the former England U21 captain who should help bolster their backline.
According to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, the North London club are working hard to finalise deals before the window shuts, although a deal for Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar are said to be dead with the player stating his desire to stay in France. Arsenal will instead turn their attentions to Athletico Madrid winger Thomas Partey, who could cost as much as £45m.
With the European transfer window closing at 11pm, it’s set to be a busy day for clubs, players and their agents. Although the limit to buy players from foreign clubs ends tonight, domestic transfers can still be conducted until October 16 when the British transfer window closes.
