In a marathon 99-minute speech to Congress, President Donald Trump declared the American dream is unstoppable, while outlining his ambitious agenda for his second term. The address, marked by partisan tension and republican applause, highlighted the administration’s bold approach to domestic and international policy.

Trump proceeded to double down on his controversial tariff strategy, asserting that these measures would make America rich once again, despite causing some of the wildest turbulence seen in a while. He remained unapologetic, predicting only a little disturbance in the economic landscape. The President announced reciprocal tariffs would kick in on April 2nd, signalling an aggressive trade stance.

The speech revealed Trump’s distinctive worldview, with particular focus on territorial expansions and aid reconsiderations. He retired his desire to acquire Greenland, promising to obtain it one way or another, and pledged to reclaim the Panama Canal. He also criticised foreign aid programmes, singling out African nations like Liberia and Uganda, and making a pointed reference to Lesotho as a country nobody has ever heard of.

So, what about Ukraine and international relations?

A significant moment came with Ukraine’s president Zelensky’s apparent olive branch, suggesting readiness to negotiate under Trump’s leadership. This followed a recent tense meeting, and Trump’s pause on military aid, highlighting the complex diplomatic dynamics at play. The potential minerals deal, which Trump had hoped to announce, remained unsigned, reflecting ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.

Domestic priorities

Energy policy took centre stage with trump championing a drill-by-drill approach to combat inflation. He criticised the previous administration handling of egg prices, which had been impacted by bird flu culling, and pledged to reduce energy costs.

The address was not without drama Democrats, many wearing pink and holding protest signs, vocally challenged the President. Congressman Al Green was even escorted out after heckling, symbolising the intense political divide currently in the United States of America.
